The NES only has its internal 2A03 audio because it can't accept audio externally (aside from the 48-pin expansion port on the underside of the NES motherboard). Although its Japanese counterpart, the Famicom, has 2 pins on it's cart connector for Audio in and out allowing for soundchips to be put in cartridges and have the audio feed into the audio lines. There is a mod to get the NES to have AIN and AOUT, but without it... it's left with its 5 internal channels.
